Pet Eye Infections

Pet Eye Infection Treatment

Just like humans, pets enjoy seeing the sight around them, and good vision is important to them. However, sometimes they might end up having an eye infection. While some eye infections are minor and can disappear on their own, others require an immediate visit to a veterinarian.

Symptoms of Pet Eye Infections

A pet eye infection is usually caused by a virus or bacteria that has entered the ocular cavity. There are a few common symptoms of eye infections that you should know:

  • Swelling or redness of an eye. When tiny red vessels in the eyes are dilated caused by an eye infection, it makes them look red and swollen.
  • Eye discharge.  It is usually one of the first symptoms of an infection. In most cases, it is either green or yellow.
  • Pawing at the eye. If the eye is itchy or your pet wants to wipe away a discharge, he will start pawing at the eye. Therefore, an unusual and constant scratching at the eye might indicate an eye infection.

What Causes Pet Eye Infections?

Most eye infections in pets are caused by bacteria, virus, or fungus, especially if a pet spends a lot of time outdoors. Conjunctivitis - a quite common eye disease - might also lead to an eye infection if not treated properly. Another common reason is Lyme disease that is carried by ticks. Furthermore, there are some pets that are more prone to eye infections than others. For example, there are certain dog breeds that are at higher risk for eye infections, including Maltese, Lhasa Apso, and the Shih Tzu.

How Is An Eye Infection Treated?

The first thing a veterinarian will do when he sees your pet is the eye examination. It will help him to figure out whether it is an infection or something else. If the infection is diagnosed, the proper treatment will be suggested. Minor eye infections are treated with eye drops and antibiotics, and the treatment usually takes a few days. Major infections might require further investigation, after which surgery may be needed.

It is important to get prompt treatment for eye infection as soon as possible. First, it causes extreme discomfort to your pet and decreases his quality of life. And second, it may indicate serious health issues that need to be investigated.

My baby was scared but they put him at ease. Ohh and his humans too. They have home what seems to be the right medicine because he is already eating and down for a good nap. All I can say is THANK YOU

  • "This is my first review so bear with me.....Under a very hard emergency circumstance, I used this establishment yesterday for my cat. I can not express how thankful I am that I found them. It was a Sunday so my vet was closed. I was a total stranger and was treated like a lifelong customer. Whatever it is you are doing, please keep up the good work. Thank you."

  • "This place is awesome! I went in because my dog was choking on his collar! Yes, his collar! When I got there they were so urgent and alert to what seemed to be an emergency situation. (At least to me). Especially the young man at the front desk who moved really fast for someone who had a boot on his foot! Also, They were so comforting due to the fact I was crying hysterically. I would recommend this place to anyone! My puppy is back home like nothing ever happened lol. Definitely five star service."
