4th Of July: Creating A Successful Pet Holiday

Successful-Pet-Holiday

The 4th of July is almost here! While this is an exciting holiday for us humans, it can be confusing, or even downright scary, for our furry family members. At Waldorf Emergency Care, our veterinarian wants you to know how to keep your pet safe amidst the BBQs and fireworks of Independence Day.

Pet Ideas For 4th Of July Safety

Follow these tips to keep your dog, cat, or small animal safe during the 4th of July festivities:

  • If at all possible, keep your animal inside. Fireworks, grills, and people driving after drinking are all extremely hazardous to animals.
  • If you choose to take your pet outside, be sure to keep them on a leash. Even if your pet typically would never stray from the yard, fireworks can be disorienting, and it’s easy for pets to wander off and not be able to find their way back home.
  • Don’t feed your pet party food, no matter how tempting it may be (and don’t allow your guests to do so either). Feel free to whip up some tummy-friendly dog or cat treats if you’d like your pet to have a little something special for the holiday. Chicken or beef cooked on the grill and cooled is usually a safe snack for pets as well.
  • Make sure your pet’s microchip information is up to date. If your pet needs a microchip, don’t delay. If your pet already has one, call the microchip company and make sure that the have your current address and phone number on file. If your pet gets spooked by fireworks and is lost, it’s important that the shelter that finds your pet is able to contact you easily using the information stored by the microchip company.
