How to Prepare For Your First Road Trip With Your Pet

Road trips are a popular vacation idea. But Waldorf pet owners may be worried about the best way to travel with their beloved animal friends. At Waldorf Emergency Care, our team wants you to feel safe about taking your pets on the road, so here are some helpful travel tips.

Prepare Your Pet Beforehand

Be sure your animal is prepared for a long car ride. Take several practice trips to help relieve anxiety. Be sure there is a reward at the end for positive reinforcements.

Secure Your Pet During the Ride

A kennel or crate helps keep your cherished pet safe while traveling. Test out his comfort level with practice rides. Even if your animal won’t be traveling in a kennel, consider bringing it along to use at your hotels and final destination.

Other car travel options for dogs include hammocks and slings. They’re great for your pet and help protect your car upholstery. Or you can try a small animal booster car seat for your cat or dog.

Research Pet-Friendly Routes

Choose a route that includes lots of breaks for your pet. The recommendation is about 2 to 3 hours between stops. Engage with your pet during these breaks and reassure him with play and attention. Check prior to your trip that the lodging you choose along the way is pet-friendly.

Pack Carefully with Pet Essentials

Be sure there’s room in the vehicle for your animal and his crate if you’re using one. Some essentials to bring along include:

  • Food and water
  • Feeding bowls
  • Treats
  • Favorite toys
  • Leash
  • Dog/cat bed
  • Poop bags
  • Medications
  • Blankets
  • Flea comb
  • Tick remover
  • Pet grooming wipes

See the Veterinarian

Schedule a vet visit to be sure your pet is up to date on his vaccinations and healthy enough for a road trip. If your animal companion experiences nausea or anxiety in the car, speak with your vet about the best way to help. It’s also a good idea to research emergency veterinarians at your destination, for safety’s sake.
